Well, it starts with the connection of a friend of a friend willing to drag a newbie along on some adventures. I enjoy the huge green foliage and raging waterfalls that are the beauty of the PNW. I dabbled in some lower difficulty hikes, Mary's Peak, Silver Falls State Park, and some outings on the coast. When I moved to Oregon, I realized that the beauty of the surrounding mountainous landscape gave me a warm feeling inside. Despite there being some access to the Appalachians and Catskills, they’re not close enough to make the grueling drive through NYC a viable weekend option.īesides, the tallest peak of Mount Mitchell at 6,000 some odd feet of a straightforward hike is incomparable to even some of the smallest peaks on the west coast. In fact, I’m fairly certain that the island may outcompete the Midwest for being the flattest area in the country. ![]() Now, like many others, when you hear New York, you think skyscrapers, traffic, and the oh-so-classy attitude, but what you don’t think is mountains. Two years, and two months ago, I dropped everything I had known in Long Island, NY, and moved across the country to the PNW to pursue a Ph.D. ![]()
